‘brak’ review in Tiny Mix Tapes

Employing subtle sine tone oscillations and field recordings as sonic source material, the two short pieces simply titled “1” and “2” gently explore timbre and presence … This is an excellent, restrained effort, both in terms of content and length, and a thoroughly remedying listen.

brak is available on Soft Error. Edition of 50 C16 cassettes, and infinite downloads.

‘brak’ – Tape on Soft Error available for pre-order

New tape out Nov 27 on Soft Error. Limited edition C16 and infinite download.

brak is a pair of timbral studies.
Sine tone oscillators, clicks, and cassette
field recordings stop and start;
drifting blocks of sound.

Recorded in London and Dungeness.

brak – Scots for break, as in broken waves ‘rolling towards the sea shore.’

Empty Damage – new tape on falt records

My new tape, Empty Damage, is out now on falt records, a wonderful musique concréte/collage/sound art imprint based in France.

Two studies examining empty and damaged tapes and tape equipment, closed systems. No source audio on the tapes.

Available on home-dubbed C30 cassette (edition of 30) and download.

Interview with Cycling ’74

A couple of months ago I had a chat with the lovely folks at Cycling ’74. You can read it here.

Phil Maguire has gained praise across the web as an artist using sine tones, everyday found sounds, and amplified noise, with Max/MSP being one of his main tools, . His minimal yet engaging textural environments have been suitably described as “A popping, whirring, stuttering thing”. Phil recently took some time to answer few questions about his music and unique process.
