Phil Maguire is a Cork-based Scottish composer, producing electronic sound works that explore emptiness and emergence, of self, machine, and space. His work draws from extensive experience composing, performing, and presenting works across the spectrum of Minimalism. At the core of Maguire’s work is an exploration of continous yet almost imperceptible movement in sound. He places timbre under the microscope in order to examine fine details of sound over extended durations. In doing so, he invites the listener to engage deeply with electronic sound, uncovering moments of stillness that enable profound and personal experiences.
Maguire performs extensively in the international scene. Recent performances include Klub Gromka (Slovenia), Paviljoen Ongehoorde Muziek (Netherlands), The Complex (Ireland) and Café Oto (UK). Recorded works are frequently presented at festivals and on radio stations globally, including Radio CASo (Argentina), BBC Radio 3 (UK), L A D I G (Italy), and Dublin Digital Radio (Ireland).
Maguire has regular international collaborative projects with Anne La Berge, Primož Bončina, and Aonghus McEvoy, among others. He is a doctoral researcher in Music at University College Cork, and his work is released on various independent labels including Dinzu Artefacts, Confront Recordings, Farpoint Recordings, and his own wheat flats press. Between 2016 and 2022 Maguire ran verz, a label, concert series, and radio show for experimental music and sound.
